Hey CEO Coach,
I stared at the post-it on my desk.
After 90 agonizing ADHD-ridden minutes of ping-ponging through my contacts on my phone, scrounging up my Gmail contacts, opening and closing LinkedIn about 50 times, and scowling at my Facebook friends list…

There I was, super pregnant, and super in-debt up to my ears with this coaching certification, expensive consultants, programs, and my new business computer, and I had… 8.
This wasn’t what I had in mind when I decided to become a coach full-time and ditch corporate.
I’m not sure how it is possible, but all alone (except for baby) in my office, I burst into tears… it wasn’t just the hormones, it was the hopelessness that I could have invested so much, and worked so hard, just to get to eight.
It was so clear that day as I stared at that post-it, that more investment was required to figure out how to turn strangers into dream clients, and I was at the end of my rope (and my credit).
Was I up for it? More risk? More time spent on this business that was taking from time with my kids, my husband or pursuing something way less stressful?
The obstacle is the way forward.
This particular hissy fit in the dark in the early days of building my business was anything but quiet inside, but outside, no one knew I was struggling.
I had tremendous feedback from my peers in the coaching program, they couldn’t believe how good I was at asking the exact questions in that precise moment… they all thought I had been coaching for years already!
But the problem was staring me in the face: I didn’t have enough relationships outside my friends in coaching school and my family to make this business a real thing.
It was SO embarrassing!
“I don’t have time” was what I had told myself for years before starting this business - with my busy work schedule, traveling 46 weeks a year, and raising a family, there wasn’t exactly a ton of free time.
I needed more relationships, and I had just spent a decade avoiding making new ones on purpose, in the name of efficiency and focus.
Now, here I was, tens of thousands of dollars sunk into the business idea, the training, the getting better at my craft, to get stumped by a freaking POST-IT.
There was just no sugar-coating it… I would need to learn how to turn this introverted, nerdy, stuck in corporate mama of 4, and happy-to-journal-alone nerd into someone who meets people, talks to people, and fits with people SO THAT I COULD coach lots of people.
It was the stuff of nightmares.

I wasn’t exactly a stranger to meeting strangers… I just hated it.
In my corporate career, we frequently had networking events where I’d hafta go and shudder meet people…
My usual approach was to wear all black (or very, very dark grey), show up late, and leave early. I did whatever I could to blend into the wall paper, and avoid new people talking to me - not because I didn’t love people, but because I was certain they wouldn’t love talking to me.
So I blended in. Or tried to. And did everything I could to avoid networking. Ew.
The Way Forward
It wasn’t until I was “post-it slapped” into the reality of my social situation that I decided to double-down on being more social…
And sometimes, that rude awakening by a reality we don’t like, is exactly what we need to invite change in. It’s the one thing about shame, guilt, and pain that is awesome: it often teaches us “it’s time for something new”.
Make no mistake, I was still awkward AF. But I decided to try something new, and dadgum, it worked.
I picked up the post-it, squinted at the first name, and wrote the longest and most terribly apologetic email ever to ask the person for a favor, to sit down with me and do a complimentary coaching session so that I can graduate from the certification program.
Then I hit send.
Then, I copy-pasted the first email, and sent it to the other 7 people, one by one, from my free Gmail account.
DING!
I got my first reply!
And holy tolito, they said YES! And we set the appointment for the next day.
Cue the happiest of desk dances… but then, here’s when magic occurred.
After coaching my FREAKING FACE OFF, my freebie client asked “so what’s all this for?”
“I have a buddy”
I said “oh, I’m starting a coaching business”
“YOU SHOULD! That session was really good!”
“You think so?”
“YES! You know, I have a buddy that’s thinking about changing jobs, do you think he can do one of these sessions? Who knows, he might really want a coach right now”
I blinked twice. It had literally not occurred to me that people know other people.
“Uh… sure”
And just like that, 8 turned into 9.
Sometimes when something works, you just have to try it again, and guess what? Out of the 8 people, I got 4 more referrals, which turned into the 10 complimentary coaching sessions I needed.
